SOPA/PIPA, Goats And Koalas
Reposting from a link pointed out by jeff_morris, The Oatmeal.com posteda great short piece on why the SOPA/PIPA bills are bad and need to have your local Congresscritters get written to in protest.

If I understand the provisions of the bill correctly, if SOPA were currently law then because I just posted this link Oprah Winfrey could now demand that my LJ be taken down (yes, all of it, even though this is the only post ever that has mentioned Oprah) just by complaining to law enforcement. No having to prove damages were caused by my posting a link. No just removing the one piece that she has an issue with. All of it. Just because. Not cool.

Don't get me started on being able to vote sites off the Internet without due process. That's a whole 'nother can of very scary, badly written worms. But that's included in this as well.

I agree that there's a lot of digital piracy and copyright infringement. I agree that we need better laws handling it. I do not agree that these bills are an appropriate solution to the problem. If you don't know what these laws are, please do take a few minutes today to familiarize yourself with them, and understand why they are so scary. Wikipedia has a write-up on SOPA here and PIPA here. (And yes, you can read them even today.)

Ya, I've contacted my Congress critters. Surprisingly, I gave kudos to Pete Stark (Represents the fightn' 13th!) for not supporting SOPA.

To bad I can't say the same for Boxer and Feinstein in regards to PIPA. Feinstein's email site has packed in.
