That Was Random
My mom commented about pictures of damage from the earthquake in Nagano. Being knowledgeable about Japanese geography I flatly stated there is no way the 'quake off the coast of Sendai caused damage in Nagano. It's way too far. Turns out Nagano got their own: a 6.2 at 4 AM local time on March 12. USGS information on it here.

Yeah, it happened around the same time another quake (aftershock to the big one) hit the Sendai area.

D: I was following it as it happened.

They did, by far. The epicenter on the Nagano-area 'quake was in a remote, mostly unpopulated area. I've actually found no reports of damage beyond my mother's second-hand news of a mudslide. Japan's a modern country with excellent earthquake standards, so a 6.2 isn't really an issue.
