Note to Self: Think Bigger
Interesting article off of Yahoo on self-made millionaires: "The biggest obstacle to wealth is fear. People are afraid to think big, but if you think small, you’ll only achieve small things."

I was chatting my my dad the other day, and he pointed out there's a family tradition of being retired at 55. I'd always assumed that I'd be doing the 8-5 grind until I was 70. Now, I'm looking at being out of it in my early 50's. Not saying I'm not going to be doing things that make money. Just saying I'm not doing this working for stupid companies thing for that much longer.

Makes sense, and lots of people don't even live that much longer past retirement, though that's maybe more true for men than women.

I think aiming for retirement itself sucks though. We'd surely go crazy. But maybe if it would be like the time you start sharpening swords or translating as a contractor or hobby or something.

I dunno. For all the crap about millionaires, I think I don't need quite that much money. Will be true for you too if your house is paid off by then and if we remain single and without children. I think I want to find a way to make about the same amount of money I do now with less work maybe or less stress. Or marry and live off some guy's pension. :p

Marrying and living off some guy's pension is sounding better and better, I have to say. :P

Okay, or maybe not. I think I'm more aiming for the financial freedom to be able to walk out on a job that sucks (not that I ever end up in those...), or spend time writing books or translating (I'll do it professionally, it doesn't all have to be fluffy fun) or running tours to Japan. Make a little money on the side, but doing things I want to do. Travel the world. See stuff. Do stuff. Anything other than be stuck indoors dealing with annoyances all day long!

Oh, and with the research already done and an interest in IniD thanks to the relative success of the manga in translation, maybe we should go into the e-pub of the corresponding Japan tour. ^_^

Huh, I hadn't thought of writing that up and publishing online. Clearly I am not thinking outside the box (book?) enough.

Yes, yes, yes! I have been meaning to ping you and see if I can't take you guys out to the Curry House and bend your ear about the wonders of Japan. A little Byrd mentioned you were expressing interest, so we put together a few ideas to run by you.

My mom retired early to take care of my grandparents. She still works an occasional day or two. And note that retirement can be done frugally, though having health insurance is critical.

Have you thought about doing anything like a Japan destination travel book with your beautiful photographs?

Oh, absolutely. I am working on several different ideas. Any time I get bogged down with job hunting I remind myself that having time to work on books about Japan is why I want to get a job that supports my life rather than eating it.
