Musings On Writers
I've come to the conclusion that Shukawa Minato doesn't like writing most of the GUYS crew. This dawned on me while reading the Mebi novels, where so far about the only characters who've opened their mouths are Kanata (duh), Ryuu, Sakomizu, and Mirai. And looking at the other episodes he's done (Mates-seijin, Invincible Mama, and the plant guy), those are about the only characters who get screen time. (If any of them do... See my comments about Invincible Mary Sue Mama.)

Yes, that was random.

So he's more of a story guy, or prefers to focus on the aliens?

More focusing on the aliens, I think. And philosophical issues, since that's a theme in both the lonely plant monster episode and the dude who's mad about his father getting killed episode. (Still really not sure what the point of the Super Mama episode is -- but then I rarely watch it.)

I am having a massive brainfart...*PING* OHHHH THE ONE WITH THE ILLUSTRATOR LOLZ. Aheh. (Y'mean Supermama's *not* a big rolling parody? Cos the merge scene is straight out of RoUM. 8D)

Your comment about 'lonely monsters', however, giveth me ebil thoughts. *ding*

"Dammit! Nothing's working!"
"--Captain Ryuu! The analysis has come back!"
"This monster only awakens every 100 years, and won't stop rampaging until--"
"Until WHAT?! Spit it out!"
"--it finds a mate."
"...Oh, DAMN."

I want to say that's a shame, because the GUYS crew has a lot of potential just within normal interactions, but maybe it's nice to focus elsewhere for a bit? That said, all 3 of those episodes were ones I could really do without.

One of those three makes my top ten favorite list. One of them makes my top one least favorite list. And the third falls somewhere in the middle.

And yeah, a little more character interaction would be cool. Particularly since, if it's done right, it doesn't have to take a lot. Previous writers have done a lot of work early on to make it very quick to nail the characters.

If I take 'characters who've opened their mouths' literally, I think almost everyone (well, not sure about George or Marina) has at least a meaningful line in the Mates-seijin episode. As for the Invincible Mama episode, I think you're probably right. I certainly can't recall what is said to save my life (and if I do, I would probably attribute a line to the wrong person). However, I am kind of conflicted about the plant guy episode. On one hand, it's the episode that manages to ignore most of GUYS. On the other hand, I consider it one of those 'Mirai is really an alien, thus an outsider' episodes. So I guess it makes sense in a way for Mirai to not really have interactions with other GUYS and goes off alone.

Anyway, I think this is an interesting point. I'm not sure whether the writer actually doesn't care about most of the GUYS crew, or he simply thinks them not relevant to the particular stories he wants to tell. (It's possible. I like GUYS, but I don't think every single episode has to be about them and no one else. Still, it's a hard balance to strike, to have someone else in the story and to not have that guest outshine the regulars, something Invincible Mama episode seems to forget. I do, however, think the other two episodes must do something right, despite the lack of GUYS, so to speak.)
