Situation Not Normal
Bitchy Boss Lady keeps talking to me. Not about work stuff, just friendly chit-chat. It's very weird, considering that usually she either ignores me completely (rather the way one ignores a bug that one doesn't like, but can't be bothered to squish), or manages some sort of barely-grunted "hey."

It makes me wonder what she's up to, and what she wants. It also reminds me of a quote by Timov, in Bablyon 5: "The secret to the sucess of our relationship is our lack of communication. I would know why you are endangering this."

I'm halfway tempted to try asking her something like "why do you keep talking to me? Usually you just ignore me, so I'm finding this very strange." But somehow, I think that might not be... tactful? Wise? Something like that. Still... All things considered, it's tempting. I mean, what's she going to do? Give me a bad review? Threaten to lay me off? Heh. Yeah, um, go for it. Somehow I don't think asking one's boss why they suddenly decided to be friendly is really cause for firing someone.

I wish she would go back to grunting at me. It wigs me out when she's all friendly.

When people who don't normally talk to me start talking, I smile graciously, and at my next opportunity I say "Is there something I can help you with?" Keep smiling.

People will frequently stutter and say, "no, I was just passing the time." or "I was kind of hoping you'd do blah" or "why would you ask that, I'm just chit chatting?"

Assuming you get the last, you can then say, "Well, I've noticed normally you're quite busy and don't get much of a chance to chat with me. It's kind of refreshing, I was wondering if everything was okay, or if you were in need of help, etc."

Gives you an in to bring up the topic.
