Failure Analysis 101

I wonder if I shouldn't create a support and organization rant similar to slothman's programing rants.

So here's a rant: If you are asked what the probably cause for the failure of the automatic system backups is, "Well, we can't take that system down for maintenance, though we can't gurantee that would have fixed it" is not an adequate description of the issue. Symptoms that tell you there is a problem should be documented. Any error message that occur would be good. But don't just whine that you couldn't do work the way you wanted to. It most likely contributed, but it isn't the cause.
